Empowering Sustainable Energy Choices through Gamification

The Impact

Although numerical data on the app’s performance is not yet available, the anticipated impact is significant. By engaging users in an interactive experience, the design encourages them to take proactive steps in home maintenance, ultimately leading to tangible energy savings. If users follow through with the suggested repairs, they have the potential to reduce their energy consumption by up to 5%—a meaningful improvement both for their wallets and for the environment.

Beyond the financial savings, the project represents a shift in how homeowners perceive energy efficiency. Instead of seeing it as a complex or costly endeavor, they are introduced to a solution that makes it simple, accessible, and even enjoyable. Engie now has a dynamic tool that not only educates but also empowers individuals to take meaningful action toward sustainability, reinforcing their leadership in the energy sector.

Through this collaboration, we successfully bridged the gap between information and action—transforming energy efficiency from an abstract concept into a concrete, achievable goal for homeowners.

Engie, a leader in sustainable energy solutions, is dedicated to helping property sector players create and manage zero-carbon comfort in their buildings. With expertise spanning design, financing, construction, renovation, operation, and maintenance of energy-related installations, Engie is at the forefront of energy efficiency and sustainability. Their commitment to reducing carbon footprints extends beyond just offering technical solutions—they actively seek innovative ways to engage and educate users about energy-saving practices.

For this project, Engie France aimed to tackle a crucial challenge: how to encourage homeowners to be more proactive in maintaining their homes for optimal energy efficiency. With rising energy costs and a growing emphasis on sustainability, there was a need to help users understand the direct correlation between home repairs and long-term savings on energy consumption. They needed a solution that would not only inform but also inspire users to take action.

Compelling
Event

Engie recognized that many homeowners were unaware of how small repairs and maintenance efforts could significantly impact their energy consumption. Traditional awareness campaigns had limited effectiveness, as users often found them too technical or unrelatable. Engie needed an interactive and engaging approach to educate users on energy conservation in a way that felt natural and motivating.

To achieve this, they sought a fresh perspective on user experience and interface design. That’s where I came in. My role was to craft an innovative UX/UI solution that would not only educate users about energy efficiency but also make the learning process enjoyable. Through our collaboration, we aimed to develop a gamified web application that would encourage users to assess their homes, identify necessary repairs, and connect with the right professionals to implement energy-saving solutions.

The Process

To ensure that the final product effectively met both Engie’s goals and user needs, I facilitated multiple workshops with key stakeholders. These sessions allowed us to deeply understand the pain points, user behaviors, and barriers to adopting energy-saving practices. Through these discussions, we discovered that the best way to drive engagement was through gamification—an approach that would transform learning into an interactive and rewarding experience.

With this insight, we carefully curated the necessary information and presented it in a simple, intuitive way. The user journey was designed to be seamless: homeowners would answer a series of questions about their homes, receive tailored recommendations on necessary repairs, and be provided with a list of professional agents who could assist them. Every step of the experience was optimized to be as user-friendly as possible, ensuring that even those unfamiliar with energy conservation concepts could easily navigate the platform and take action.

The Outcome

The result was a gamified web application designed to educate and empower users to make informed decisions about their home maintenance. Unlike Engie’s existing corporate platform, which had a professional and technical tone, this new platform was visually engaging, featuring an intuitive interface with simple icons, attractive colors, and interactive elements designed to captivate users.

By incorporating playful elements, we ensured that users were not just passively consuming information but actively participating in their learning journey. The application guided them through self-assessments, offering personalized insights into their homes’ energy efficiency levels. At the end of the experience, users received clear recommendations on repairs they could make, along with access to qualified professionals who could help them implement the necessary changes.
